Dr. Carton was born in Bridgewater too many years ago to mention. Although his family moved quite a bit when he was young his mother, a Bridgewater girl, always brought the family back to Green Bay for the summers instilling in Dr. Carton a love of the South Shore and a desire to live here someday.

Dr. Carton studied engineering at Saint Francis Xavier before enrolling in the Nova Scotia Technical College in Halifax. After completing the third year of the Architecture program he returned to X to earn a BSc in biology. He followed that endeavor with a graduate year in psychology at Dalhousie eventually finding himself enrolled in the Doctor of Optometry program at The New England College of Optometry in Boston where he earned membership in the Optometric Gold key Honour Society. Completing his residency at Walter Reid Army Medical Centre in Washington DC. Dr Carton graduated with honours in 1979. He opened his first practice in his home town of Houlton, Maine. Two years later he moved to Oromocto, NB. Where he practiced for 20 years in partnership with Dr. Joe White until moving to Maine to care for his elderly father.
While in Maine Dr. Carton attended The Landing School of boat building and then spent a year working in a local boat yard before returning to Canada. In 2005 he accepted the position of Clinical Director of the TLC laser eye centre in Halifax. He remained there for the next 5 years working closely with the centre surgeon Dr Dan Belliveau. Missing both general practice and being his own boss Dr. Carton opened the doors of his present practice in Lunenburg in the Spring of 2009.
These days Dr. Carton lives in the Feltzen South area of Lunenburg County with his wife of 35 years. Jennie is a well known artist whose work has been shown widely on The South Shore and in NB where she taught at The NB. College of Craft and Design for 12 years. They have four grown children enjoying their own careers in Toronto, Collingwood, Vermont and Ireland.
